JLGR to match up to $1000 in donations to support "Hope for Haiti"
Leah Sherman

Dear friends,

The Haitian earthquake has been devastating to the citizens of that country, as well as to those of us who have personal connections in that area. The Junior League of Grand Rapids, in keeping with our mission to help women and children, wants to do our part to provide assistance to the victims.

Although our resources are already earmarked for local projects, we have found a way to provide a matching fund of up to $1000 for money donated from JLGR members. As per our 501(c)3 not-for-profit requirements, we are prohibited from fundraising for any secular organization. So, after considerable research, we have chosen the Hope for Haiti organization to be the benefactor of our efforts. You are encouraged to read about this organization through the links attached below. Three particularly important highlights: 1. Over 98% of their revenue is used directly on programs for the children (not administrators salaries, etc.) 2. They expect a tremendous influx of newly orphaned children resulting from this disaster and 3. It takes about $29/month per child to house, feed and educate each orphan.

If you would like to donate to this cause, please make your tax deductible check out to Hope for Haiti and send it to the Junior League office, C/O Kathy Gill, 25 Sheldon Blvd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. The JLGR will match the first $1000 received. Checks will be collected and mailed out two weeks from today so don't wait to get them in the mail!

Also, for those of you who would love to help but are financially unable, please consider the following. Our fellow leaguer Kirsten Zarou has friends/neighbors who have been trying for three years to adopt their little girl, Josie, from the God's Little Angels Orphanage in Haiti. The little girl is alive but homeless as her orphanage is no longer inhabitable.  Kirsten is currently working on ways to help this family. When she finalizes her plans, she may need manpower to pull it together. I know that we have lots of big hearts and helping hands in the JLGR and if you are moved to assist her with this effort, I'm sure she would greatly appreciate hearing from you. You are encouraged to send her an email at kirstenzar@hotmail.com.

Thank you everyone.

Sincerely,
Leah Sherman
